Pilot Training Interest and Availability

Hi all, Over the past few months, we have seen a substantial increase in the number of no-shows and cancellations of Pilot mentoring sessions. As a result of this, mentors are very frequently losing interest in committing their time to mentor, this leads to a reduction in the amount of training conducted, a decrease in the frequency of sessions and increases waiting times. This is territory that we are always trying to avoid as it can be very difficult to get out of due to the voluntary nat

ATIS 101

Hi all, Whilst provision of an ATIS is principally the responsibility of the TWR controller, members on all positions - including DEL/GND - are permitted to operate a VATSIM ATIS at any time. Please note that ATIS use is governed by the Global Controller/ATIS Information Policy. The following tutorial shows how to set-up a basic ATIS using EuroScope: 1. Click on the runway icon on the EuroScope ribbon for the runway selection dialog; 2. Scroll down to find the aerodrome

Training Department Q2 Review

Six months down; six to go! Firstly, to all those who’ve had their head glued to a textbook for the past few months, welcome back! And to those of us who’ve had to listen to the perpetual sighs of students... hallelujah, it's over! Here’s what the Training Department has been up to over the past three months: April: With several members of the team focusing on academic exams, things were reasonably quiet on the ATC side of the fence.  Pilot Training led most of the development

Stepping Aside

Hi all, Alongside the rest of the Community Team, I will be stepping aside from my role. I would like to thank everyone that I've worked with in both ATC Training and Community, in particular @Barrie Joplin, @Nick Marinov, @Alex Beard and @Oliver Rhodes (without whom I would've probably experienced at least 17 mental breakdowns by now ?). All the best! Leon ?

Evolution and change

Dear All The community team will be stepping aside from their roles to make way for something shiny, new, and hopefully much better in the department's place.  With Nick successfully applying for the region membership role back in March (congrats @Nick Marinov), that leaves only Leon and me. Thank you to all of the people I have worked with for giving up their time to help make the network a better place (except @Leon Grant who quite frankly was a massive pest ?). Be good to one a

Exam Season Events (2019)

All, We all know that things quieten down during exam season, for this reason, the number of events in this time has decreased. I for one have recently returned from exam leave and I know that the vast majority still have a month to go.... good luck!! Our next event will be "On the rock", on the 23rd of June. Ben will return from leave in a few weeks, Harrison and I will be running the department for the time being.  Just a quick update about why our events have slowed down s

[Training] Exam Season 2019

All, We're coming once again to the examination season, wherein a large proportion of our membership will be sitting GCSEs, A-Levels, or other important exams. The first examination on the JCQ common timetable is on Monday 13th May (though Wales starts slightly earlier on Tuesday 7th May). The examination period stretches to Thursday 20th June for GCSEs, and to Tuesday 25th June for A-Levels. This period (and the time preceding it, from around now) will likely see large numbers of stud

Changes to the Manchester Familiarisation Sessions and Gatwick Endorsement

Hi all, Over the past couple of months, me and Josh have spoken to mentors and students to see what could be improved in regards to S1 continuation training. The most common things that cropped up were that the Manchester Familiarisation Sessions weren't getting used to their full and proper potential, and that the Gatwick Endorsement was not properly training people. Here are the changes that we have made;Manchester Familiarisation: As some of you may be aware, TG New Controller, along with the

Training Department Q1 Review

Guten Abend! 1 down, 3 to go! What a quarter it has been! Here’s a short summary of what the team has achieved since January this year. January: The month started off with the addition of EGAD (Newtownards), EGCJ (Sherburn-in-Elmet), EGSQ (Clacton) and EGHJ (Bembridge) to our collection of AG/AFISO aerodromes; followed closely by the release of the UKCP (thanks to the Rt Hon gentleman Andy Ford). Since the release of the UKCP, TGNC have integrated its use and setup into the OBS session

Livestreaming Update: Behind the Scope

Hello All! I'm happy to announce that 'Behind the Scope' will be making a return to the VATSIM UK YouTube channel. However, we obviously cannot proceed without your involvement! We are looking for people to live stream their controlling sessions directly onto the YouTube channel, for everyone to see. They will need to read the live chat and, if able, verbally answer ATC related questions that the viewers may have. (Responding verbally to the live chat is not 100% mandatory, dependant on

Graphics

Good afternoon, In the marketing update, I said that people interested in making some banners could help out. I had 16 people express interest, so I made a "Graphics Team". Since March, the Graphics team have been sharing knowledge and expertise in areas of Photoshop and Marketing. We are lucky to have people who are studying this in education or work in marketing. They have been making event banners, graphics for announcements, badges for forum awards, posters for pilots and advertisements

Informal Staff-Ups Introduction

Alright buds,   I know I'm a bit late with this post, but for those of you who haven't already noticed, we have now introduced something called Informal Staff-ups. The idea of the staff-ups are to encourage groups of people to staff up their favourite airports, and we will then advertise them accordingly. This should increase the amount of traffic you'll receive, and make your time on the network more enjoyable. The full details are explained on the forum post here, but we just want to

E duobus unum: Merging Waiting Lists

Hi all, At the beginning of 2017, in the delightfully entitled post ‘Exitus Acta Probat’ (Latin for ‘the end justifies the means’, from the poetry of Ovid, if you’re interested), Sam announced the merger of the old RTSs into the Training Groups (TGs). One of the main reasons for doing so was to reduce the discrepancies in waiting times between the RTSs. In the same spirit, and following discussions with students, mentors, and staff, we have now merged the S2 and S3 waiting lists for TG
