As many of us will know, the first few flights on the network are usually stressful and the amount of information can seem overwhelming.
Behind the scenes, the Training Department has been considering the idea of creating a program to assist new members in transitioning into flying on the network.
Before going ahead and developing/launching the programme, we want to hear the thoughts of the community! We kindly ask that you read through the below information and then fi
Please join me in congratulating @Darren Hill as he takes on his new role as Pilot Training Manager. Darren has been an active mentor in the training department for 18 months and took on the role of VFR Flight Instructor last spring.
He has played a vital role in helping us obtain our approval for the new P1 PPL(A) rating and without a doubt, has the motivation and skill to carry VATSIM UK's Pilot Training into the future.
Over the next few month Darren will be wor
P1 PPL(A) Goes Live!!!
The Training Department has been working hard over the past few months to develop our P1 PPL(A) course which aligns with the new VATSIM network-wide ratings. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the collective tens if not hundreds of hours to produce content, video lessons, Moodle questions, and lesson planning; your work has helped immensely in making these courses possible. A massive thank you to:
Good evening all ,
As of 2259z this evening VATSIM UK will no longer be offering training for the current pilot ratings. During the next 5 days, ATOs and the central VATSIM pilot training team will be making the necessary changes to documentation and systems to reflect the new pilot ratings which are set to go live on August 18th 0000z.
Please see details below on how this affects you in you are currently training for a pilot rating in VATSIM UK:

Back in September of 2018 when the ATC and Pilot Training Departments merged into one - I was adamant that the ATC Training side of things needed an Operations Manual similar to the manual we are required to have as past of our ATO for Pilot Training. The purpose being to provide anyone who operates within the Training Department with guidance, advice, and direction on how we operate so that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet.
In order to standardise the way that our
VATSIM have decided to postpone the launch of the new pilot ratings to September 1st . As a result of this we will now continue to issue training places for our P2, P3 and vIR(A) courses; and continue to run our P1 Seminars. If we receive any further updates we will let everyone know!
Yesterday, VATSIM.net announced that the pilot rating system will be restructured from June 1st. The new system will more closely emulate the structure of ‘real-world’ pilot training, and will increase the consistency of training provided by all Authorised Training Organisations (ATOs) through more strictly defined course syllabi.

Over the past few months, we have seen a substantial increase in the number of no-shows and cancellations of Pilot mentoring sessions. As a result of this, mentors are very frequently losing interest in committing their time to mentor, this leads to a reduction in the amount of training conducted, a decrease in the frequency of sessions and increases waiting times. This is territory that we are always trying to avoid as it can be very difficult to get out of due to the voluntary nat
Calling all Pilots!
VATSIM UKs Training Department is one of the few ATOs that provides training for all of the Pilot ratings (P1-P5) and we are looking to expand our mentoring team! The only requirements to mentor are as follows:
Hold the rating you wish to mentor;
Be a home or visiting a member of VATSIM UK;
Be a member in good standing on the network.
If you are not currently a member of VATSIM UK you can request to visit here. Append a message to your applic
The P3 (VFR Pilot) syllabus has been updated in line with the recently changed P2 and P4.
The CTS reports have been adjusted to include each lesson as an item to be marked, as opposed to the old method where each item on the report was criteria to be marked for each lesson. After each lesson is completed general comments about the lesson and information the mentor wishes to provide to the student will be posted in that lesson on the mentoring report. The mentor will then decide
The role of Initial Flight Instructor will be carried out by @Matthew Wilson alongside his current role of Pilot Training Administrative Manager. Matthew is no stranger to the department nor to this role so we look forward to seeing the P1 course grow.
3 down 1 to go! Q3 of 2018 for the PTD has seen some of the highest numbers of mentoring sessions in a long time. This coupled with a noticeable increase in members interaction with the PTD has made these past few months, in my opinion, our most successful quarter to date! ?
Mentor recruitment (particularly within the P2 & P3 courses) has continued to be very successful,

Hold any real-world pilot license? If so, see below and you could be eligible for our Fast Track scheme's which can take you all the way from 'nothing to everything'!
Over the past year or so I have been approached several times by members of the community asking if we offer any 'fast track' schemes for members who hold real-world pilot licenses, i.e. PPL (A), CPL (A) and ATPL, and in the past, we haven't. However, the question we've been asking ourselves is, if the CAA or FAA is willing to

I would like you all to join me in welcoming @Matthew Wilson back to the Pilot Training Department Staff team in his role as Pilot Administrative Manager. @James Gibson will be vacating this role into his new role of Development Flight Instructor, a new role in the department.
Why do we need more people? The VATSIM UK Pilot Training Department is currently training over 40 students with 103 people waiting for training, therefore we are developing new ways of speeding up trai
As mentioned in the Q2 department report we have been working on new Syllabi and lesson plans for our courses and the first one to release will be for the P4 (IFR Pilot) course. The actual content of the rating and the way in which we examine the course will remain the same. This change introduces lesson plans for mentors to follow which will speed up and focus training.
The CTS reports have been adjusted to include each lesson as an item to be marked, as opposed to the old met
A quick summary from the Pilot Training Department of Q2!
We have made great headway in our mentor recruitment which is reflected by the number of sessions conducted as the months of Q2 progress.
Oliver Hall has departed the team as IFR Flight Instructor, this role will soon be filled.
FTE production has been slow over the past 6 weeks due to availability with the team, but we will gear back up as this month continues!

VATSIM UK's Pilot Training Department is proud to announce that we are now certified to train and award the P5 (Advanced IFR Pilot) Rating. After 9 long months of development and content creation, we have finally done it!
Our P5 base will be located at Aberdeen (EGPD) International Airport, our first time venturing this far north! The P5 course requires different types of non-precision approaches to be conducted, so we felt that Aberdeen would be a perfect choice as it has published LOC, VO
A quick summary from me of Q1 of 2018, please find some wonderful graphs below of our mentoring and exam performance this quarter!
This quarter we have made excellent headway in recruiting more mentors to the team and we have welcomed 2 new examiners to the team.
We are finalizing development of our P1 moodle course with the hope to release at the beginning of the next quarter.
Our P5 course has been approved by VATSIM.net and is ready for lau

As many of you are aware the PTD offers training for the P2 (Flight Fundamentals) Rating, up until this point, we have used the C172SP as the training aircraft for this rating. After collaboration between mentors and instructors, students will now be able to use the C152, C172 and PA28 (non-complex) for training. The aircraft specific theory will remain based upon the C172 until further documentation for other aircraft has been made and approved.

This evening the streamlining of our training material has been completed with the update to all P3 (VFR Pilot) training material. Anyone wishing to download the pack can do so on the VATSIM UK download page or by clicking here. I would like to extend a thank you to @Oliver Gates who has led the development of the new P3 training material with contributions from @James Gibson.
If you would like to sign up for the course please open a ticket via the help desk with Pilot Tr
Unfortunately, @Fraser Cooper is no longer able to commit his time to managing the P4 course. With the rapid expansion of the New Controller process, Fraser has approached me and explained that he does not have the time to manage both and feels that it would be the best decision to step down and allow someone to continue leading the course.
I would like to express my thanks to Fraser for his help during the development of the course and managing the course over the past six mon
Over the past month, the PTD has been testing the idea of seminars specific to each of the courses we offer (P1/2/3/4).
After conducting several seminars and receiving very positive feedback, we have decided to continue with the seminars.
There will be a minimum of one seminar for each course every month led by the relevant Flight Training Instructor or a small group of mentors. The seminars will be run initially for the P1 (Online Pilot) and P2 (Flight Fundamentals) cour
It's CTP season again and as we have done in the past, the Pilot Training Department would like to invite all members to a Q&A session. The session will give pilots the opportunity to ask any questions they have about the event, from what to expect on the ground to how to give a position report. Joining me to answer your questions will be members of the pilot training team, @Simon Irvine & @Sebastian Rekdal - so come armed with your questions.
We look forward to se
