Modernising and Updating the P1 PPL(A)

Background ✈️ Our P1 PPL(A) course was released on 18 September 2020 and the course has remained largely unchanged since release, besides a few clarifications on lessons and shifting a lesson or two around. In that time, we have produced 11 P1 ratings and have conducted 270 mentoring sessions (as of 23 February 2023). However, recent discussions have highlighted the need for some major changes to the P1 course. Why is change necessary? 🔍 The Waiting List It is well known that

Operations Staff Changes

Following the resignation of Thomas Mills at the start of this year right before our biggest sector/AIRAC release for years, we've had a large hole in our Operations team that many of the team have stepped in to assist with. I am pleased to announce that following his excellent work on the sector file in recent months, @Peter Mooney has agreed to move into the Sector File Coordinator role. He holds this role jointly with Luke, with Peter focusing more on sector file data and releases, Luke more

Nathan Davies

Hi all, It is with regret I announce the departure of @Nathan Davies from the Web Services Team. Nathan joined the team in August 2017 to contribute to the running of our Helpdesk. We quickly uncovered his skills in system administration and the rest is history! Over the last 5 and a half years, Nathan has provided countless hours of support to keep our systems online, secured and backed up. Him and I have spent many a late night diagnosing and fixing issues with our platforms behind t

Resignation

Hi all, After almost 2 years in the staff team I have decided to step down as Approach TGI. I started in the New Controller TG alongside @Kye Taylor and @James Taylor (They are brothers) where we worked well and achieved lots together. I then moved to the Approach TG in March 2022 where I ran the training group on my own for circa 9 months. Despite being told there would be another TGI to support me in the near future I continued on my own until January 2023 when @William Jennings and

Web Services Appointments

A few weeks ago, I announced that we were on the lookout for people to join our Web Services Team. The team and I have been overwhelmed by the number of people with valuable skills who expressed an interest in contributing to the running of our systems. We enjoyed speaking to a large number of those that applied and seeing how much talent exists within our community. Today, I am delighted to welcome three new people to our team. @Ben Esen @David Etheridge All three joi

Marketing Events Update

Hello Everyone,   First of all I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the new year. Loui, Piers, and I decided it might not be a bad idea to give an update of our plans for this year, as it's been over a year and a half since the last announcement! Following our usual break at the beginning of the calendar year, we have moved into full steam ahead with events. We are aiming for two per month, excluding GA events, which Piers will provide an update on in a separate post. An event ev

ATC Training Staff Changes

Hi all, As I'm sure many of you have seen, there have been some staff changes within the ATC Training Department in the last month. @Kye Taylor has stepped down from his role in the Tower Training Group (resignation post). Kye, I know I've said this privately but I'll extend the message (even more) publicly, you've had a huge effect on the training and experience on the network of hundreds of members. The difference you've made during a difficult time cannot be understated, thank you!

New Member Services Director

The DSG is pleased to announce that @John Batten is appointed as the Member Services Director. This recruitment round has been especially challenging as we negotiated this appointment with external parties and have held extensive discussions with the relevant applicants. Ultimately this has meant that our outgoing Member Services Director ( @Lee Roberts ) has remained in role much longer than anticipated in order to transition this function to our new appointment. For this we thank him. John is

Join Our Web Services Team!

The VATSIM UK Web Services Team is made up of a small group of people that maintain and develop the online platforms for the Division. Operations Staff Changes

I have good and bad news to announce. Starting with the bad, I regret to announce that @Thomas Mills has resigned as one of our Sector File Coordinators. Thomas was appointed at the same time as Luke as the first 2 sector file coordinators in November 2020. He has given us two whole years of work, 292 commits and just shy of 90,000 line changes on git. We are able to boast such a timely sector file release for most AIRACs in the year, thanks to Tom and Luke's hard work. Those of you that ha

Tower TGI Resignation

Joining the training team nearly two years ago, as TGNC's TGI, I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet some lovely people within the staff and mentoring team. With @Fergus Walsh at TGNC, we made it a mission to progress students through the OBS->S1 stage and during covid, we did just that!  With the TG TWR change, It was very difficult. Shortly after my appointment, I was soloing the training group

Happy New Year - Operations 2023

Another year, another 13 AIRACs gone. This has been a challenging year, with increased workload placed upon the department, after the loss of some experienced staff. With the introduction of the UK Controller Plugin API, some advances in flow control, and our ever-more present role in traffic planning for big events, it becomes hard to keep up with all our day to day roles!   One of our focuses this year has been to try to increase the list of airports that we can support documentation
