Summary:

To compliment the Blackpool-Barton event, Pilot Training is hosting our monthly groupflight. Join our mentors and students on a tricky flight from Huddersfield (EGND) to Walney Island (EGNL) with 1 or 2 circuits at both Barton and Blackpool whilst dodging the Manchester controlled airspace.

Join us in TeamSpeak at 1200z for a 1215z departure in any GA aircraft. Please remember to have charts to hand and be prompt with R/T!

Please note:

• Routing Southport Pier to St Anne's Pier is done not above altitude 1000ft to avoid the Warton MATZ, which is assumed to be active. Aircraft must contact Blackpool Approach before Southport Pier.
• Blackpool is covered top-down on VATSIM by Warton Radar. Warton also, as with real-world, provides radar approach facilities for Blackpool when open.
• When monitoring the Manchester Radar frequency, squawk 7366.

Some more information regarding the Blackpool/Warton area:

All VFR arrivals from the south should call Warton Radar if open. If Warton is closed, call Blackpool Approach. IFR arrivals can expect to be transferred to Warton by Liverpool/Manchester (where applicable). Otherwise, they may call Warton or Blackpool (though Blackpool will generally route aircraft to overfly BPL and notify Warton, transferring them if Warton has any concerns).

Warton Radar covers Blackpool top-down on VATSIM. When Warton Radar and Blackpool Approach are both open, radar approach and LARS services from Warton are optional, except for VFR inbounds to Blackpool from the south and all Warton inbounds.

Aircraft leaving the airways system may request to be transferred to Warton, rather than Blackpool (who only provide non-radar approach services), or MAN PC may do so on request from the Warton Radar controller.

Other notes/important points/local features:

• The Walney TMZ exists from SFC-FL100 over the Irish Sea (viewable on ENR 6-28). All aircraft must be equipped with a Mode C transponder or have clearance from Warton Radar before they enter the TMZ.
  • N.B. The Walney TMZ does not lie overhead Walney Aerodrome or intersect the Walney ATZ.
  • A similar procedure exists for the Burbo Bank TMZ, to the north-west of Liverpool, underneath the Holyhead & Liverpool CTAs.
• When monitoring Warton Radar, squawk 3660.
• Blackpool Tower (the imitation Eiffel Tower along Blackpool's promenade) is referred to as the "Tall Tower" in all communications with ATC to prevent confusion.
• VRPs for Blackpool and a full diagram of the Warton MATZ can be found under the Warton AIP entry (AD 2.EGNO-4-1).

Pilots should also be aware of three restricted areas, which should not be entered at any time, unless using the associated heliports:

• R312 - SFC-2100ft over and around the Springfields nuclear fuel preparation site (near Clifton, Lea, and Newton-with-Scales)
  • All traffic may fly through this zone at 1670ft or above when performing straight-in approaches to Blackpool or departing/arriving Warton.
• R444 - SFC-2000ft over and around Heysham Power Station (across the bay from Barrow & Walney Island).
• R445 - SFC-2000ft over the town of Barrow-in-Furness.
