A new set of tools...

Thanks to the hard work of @Alex Toff in particular, I'm pleased to announce a 'Squawk Generator' for use by VATSIM UK controllers. Simply type in the destination code, hit 'Generate Squawk', and one will pop up for you to issue. You can access the tool at:

squawks.vatsim.net

Additionally, this tool has been open sourced and added to VATSIM UK's organisation on GitHub. To contribute, visit the repository: https://github.com/VATSIM-UK/web-squawk-gen

---

Going forward, work has started on a new plugin to aid controllers, and we hope that it will deliver more enhanced features including (but not limited to!) stand allocation on arrival and the potential ability to link to feed information into mentoring reports. We'll be sure to keep you updated as it develops, but expect big things!

What is different? ES produces the same without having another screen open.

Seconded.

Also, does this tool follow the conventions within the UK SSR Code Assignment Plan? I believe VCA did...

Happy to be corrected.

Hi Alex,

The tool does indeed follow the Code Assignment Plan. It currently assigns squawks based on the spreadsheet that you will find in the base of the tool's repository on the VATSIM UK GitHub (link), which is derived from the plan.

Thanks,

Alex :)

Thanks for a speedy response Alex.

Would it be possible to add the following codes into the app - looking at your spreadsheet I can't see them:

1201 - 1277    Channel Islands Domestic

These codes are used for IFR departures from the Channel Islands to the UK.

Do you happen to have the source document for these @Alex Hodgkinson?

Are these codes also applicable for Mainland traffic coming to the Channel Islands, or just from the Channel Islands to Mainland UK?

Yes. They are assigned by any CI ATC unit for IFR traffic leaving or entering the Jersey Control Zone onward to the EGTT/EGPX FIR. Aircraft routing towards Rennes, Brest or any other european FIR have their own squawk code allocations:

See ENR1.6 (I can't link to it) & Jersey vMATS 2

@Alex Hodgkinson - I'd recommend suggesting future changes on the repository (https://github.com/VATSIM-UK/web-squawk-gen/issues) so that you can track their progress and be notified when they're resolved, especially if they're resolved by somebody within the community who hasn't seen your post.

Will do.

Do you know when the new code will be deployed, as I have just encountered the same error: http://prntscr.com/drzl8g

While we are talking about squawk code validation, have we also blocked out issuing emergency codes (7500, 7600, 7700) and other specific use codes such as 7004 for aeros? :)

The updated code (including the bug fix) is now live, sorry for the inconvenience ^_^

@Ash Kirby If you do spot any more codes that should be in that list, please create an issue for it :)

From what I can see in the code, no, but @Alex Toff will be able to clarify :)

At the moment, it picks a range of squawks from the possible ranges for the destination. If the destination only has one possible range, then this one is used, but most destinations have a couple to pick from.

After the range is selected, it will then pick a random number inside the range.

In practice, this has proved quite good at preventing squawks being issued too soon to each other however, we have plans to incorporate a more reliable system to ensure this.
