Changes to Midweek Madness

Hello Everyone!

Some of you may remember a similar post a year ago when we first floated the idea of a weekly event, how time flies! The event has since become synonymous with VATSIM UK, and we see huge crowds of pilots returning each week which speaks volumes for the quality of service our controllers provide. We're currently in a situation where due to the insane volume of traffic, we need a minimum of 7 C1 controllers to comfortably split London into manageable sectors and this is something which we are beginning to struggle with. The feedback we have received is that controllers are getting bored of controlling the same busy traffic flows each week, with little opportunity for a break or some variety. As such, we are going to trial a new format moving forwards in the aim of generating renewed interest from our most experienced controllers.

From the 7th of April, Midweek Madness will follow a weekly rotation as follows:

  • London Gatwick
  • Manchester
  • London Heathrow
  • Feature Week

The feature week will be open to a public vote as usual, and once the cycle completes it will restart regardless of which Wednesday of the month it happens to be. We feel this system is just as easy to follow from a pilot's perspective, and also opens the doors for other pilots/controllers who don't normally take part in the events at Gatwick. We know some people will be against this change, while others will be thrilled - please remember that this is just a trial and if it doesn't have the desired effect then we can always return to the current format. We don't however, want to become resistant to change and trying out new ideas, nor to we want to ignore the feedback from our members.

We'd like to thank all our controllers who give up their time every week, some of which are spending 4 hours of their evening controlling or coordinating these events week in, week out. Thank-you to all the pilots who return each week and helped make this event such a success, we hope you will enjoy the changes and continue keep us busy!

All the best,

Ben, Loui, and Tom

Sadly not as the runways are too close together so arrivals and departures are interleaved. As soon as an aircraft is safely down the departure is released
