Folks,

Please join me in welcome Alex Beard who is joining the ATC Training team as our new ATC Training Assistant. He's taking over my former role so any tickets or issues pertaining to ATC Training from an admin perspective will be dealt with by him. Alex has been a very mature, keen and motivated member of the Division, contributing many hours of mentoring both in SERTS and Essex and also on the Group OBS mentoring team and he has also been very helpful to me in my previous role as ATC TA. Welcome!!

Did I miss the advert? When did it get advertised?

It didn't - I appointed Alex based on merit because I believed him to be the best person for the role, which is predominantly admin based. Unless spreadsheets, tickets and copious amounts of unexciting data turn you on you're not missing much...

I have no great desire to stare at spreadsheets all day, nor have I any doubt as to the suitability of who has been chosen. However, it has been raised a number of times that 'entry' to the DSG is not done in a particularly transparent manner and just appointing someone doesn't really do anything to show there is a due process that the membership can engage with. Perhaps this is not a DSG post yes, but the greasy pole goes up from here and people tend to move sideways a lot until they are well within and there's been no open path to others that they could have followed.

I believe the role was put out to tenure at the end of September and no one applied - perhaps this may be the cause?

As a result of no one applying for that, Sam had to appoint someone on merit?

Alex, We have it from the horses mouth it wasn't openly advertised. Why are you continuing down this path?

Forgive me if I am incorrect, but that looks like an advertisement for the role.

I think some confusion as always has cropped up. It doesn't matter whether I appoint someone or open it up to application. My general thoughts are if I know someone who can do the job, wants the job and I can trust and work with well then that is it. On the other hand if I have another role which is best suited to applications such as RTSMs then I will go down that route. There is no policy or rule where we must justify our appointments and the process isn't up for debate. Simon is appointed as DD which is an open and fair process to then make the appointments he feels benefits the Division. In the mean time, I'd appreciate less pointless debates and distractions like these so we can get on with the task at hand.

If you want to moan in private my door is always open via email, ticket or when I'm around on TS.
