C1 Training Place Allocation & Hour Requirement Changes

Hi all,

Over the past few years, the enroute team have allocated C1 training places on a purely ‘first come, first served’ principle, changing the number of places available for each training sector to suit students’ eligibility. This has ensured overall fairness and parity, but can lead to uneven student:mentor ratios, and therefore uneven training times, on each sector.

To rectify this issue, from Saturday 1st May, the number of places available for each training sector will be set, and the student who is highest on the waiting list and eligible for that sector will be offered the place.
In this example, if a LON_S place becomes available, Jane Doe will be offered the place even though Joe Bloggs joined the waiting list before her:

vVo8cTs53mVEJhMx824Hcg9WB3tfCSCyHU6Bx3QgYJ3GNkNtrAkxc7uOwXbsBR5kbd5Abpv8AEbz-B6_5_kQEvFPJMFZehAd1eZURziN8SOxUCVYg4xGm8nmWJPJ_j7rUOIoRpH4

This means that students who wish to train on a specific sector will remain able to do so (albeit with a slightly increased waiting time), and students who are happy to train anywhere will be able to reduce their waiting time by meeting the criteria for multiple sectors. Importantly, it ensures that the student:mentor ratio can be maintained for each sector.

Additionally, to ensure that students’ currency on and familiarity with the APP positions underlying their training sectors is maintained, the eligibility criteria for each sector will change from Sunday 1st August. Students will need to gain at least 10 hours* post-S3 on each of the main APP positions (see below) in the sector(s) on which they wish to train in the last six months. Up to five of the 10 hours can be from online mentoring sessions.

LON_S - LL, KK, THAMES, SOLENT
LON_C - ESSEX, BB, NX
LON_N - CC, GP, NM, NT
SCO - PF, PH, PD, AA

*with the exception of ESSEX, where students will need to gain at least 20 hours post-S3 in the last six months.

As always, individual circumstances will be taken into account at the enroute instructor’s discretion if students have genuine, reasonable difficulties in meeting these requirements - just let us know!

While I agree this method is the way forward to ensure fair usage amongst the S3 students wanting to go on C1 training. However I would liked to see some sort of currency check on CTS to see where we need to build hours to ensure our current on the area that we want to be trained and as well our list position

Agreed! Some form of notifying people to when they may need to get some hours on some positions would be great, because it is rather clunky to constantly check on stats.vatsim.net.

A simple adjustment of the Gatwick Endorsement page should in theory allow for this to happen. Instead potentially searching for the callsign instead of the airport ICAO. Just looking at the core, looks as if it can be done / adjusted if it were to be implemented.

Yes, a system like that is on the cards to be developed and implemented (and as @William Brushfield has alluded, I believe it'll be a modification of the existing system) - obviously these things take time and there are a range of other important priorities for the developers, but we're planning to get it in place by August so that students can view their progress towards the criteria and instructors can see who has met them. The delay until August for the new requirements to come in gives time for these things to be put into place (as well as time for students to build hours and experience).

In the interim, you can filter for the last six months on the VATSIM.net statistics centre. Although it's obviously not a perfect solution, the data is exactly the same as you'd get on such a local system - to the best of my knowledge, our systems pull from its API - so it gives you the important information you need to know.
