Happy New Year!

I hope your festive periods have been relaxing. I'm sure many of you like me, will be looking ahead with more optimism to 2021. The past year has generated some remarkable statistics which show the vast contributions made to the division. The Operations Department has also been working hard on a number of topics recently and there are a few exciting projects in the works as we begin 2021.

Top-Sky

There has been a growing chorus of voices requesting an official VATSIM UK Controller Pack that includes 'TopSky'; which is a plugin for Euroscope that adds a host of extra features, mostly notably: enroute CPDLC. I am pleased to announce that we have now released the first contoller UK Controller Pack incorporating TopSky and have produced an introduction video explaining how to use the new features!

A massive thank you to @Luke Brown, Harry S and @Michael Pike for their efforts on this project. The Controller Pack, along with the latest 2020/14 sector file, is available here.

Sector File and Documentation

With the release of the 2020/14 sector file, we have released a sector file for 49 consecutive AIRAC cycles, plus 2 additional releases for bug fixes and events. In the last year, 38 contributors have collectively:

  • Made 1,552 commits
  • Added 53,469 lines
  • Removed 25,857 lines

We have also reviewed, authored and released in excess of 35 documents in 2020 including 6 LoAs with neighbouring vACCs and the new Scottish vMATS!

A big thanks to everyone who dedicates their time to maintaining the sector file, documents and procedures - you are the backbone of UK operations!

2020 Statistics

A quick look back at 2020 shows the effect that the pandemic has had on our activity levels. We have seen record levels of activity - approximately two-thirds more than in 2019 (which was already a good year thanks to the release of AFV). If one person were to control 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it would take them over 8 years to rack up the ATC hours we have accrued in 2020.

Aerodrome statistics show that Heathrow continues to be the most popular airport for pilots whilst Gatwick and Manchester see the most controlling activity.
