The division has concluded the recruitment for the vacancy of Operations Director. We have chosen to appoint @Jack Edwards to this role.

Jack has most recently been TGI Approach within the Training Department and has held roles in both the vRAF and in the VA/SOA team of VATSIM.net where he previously has coordinated operations across multiple agencies and countries. Via this and contributions to the operations functions in the UK he has indicated suitability for executing the role. During interview, Jack laid before us a clear vision for how the department can grow and thrive. He made it clear that he has ambitions to expand the operations team and further the capabilities of the division by providing robust and coordinated output that we have begun to establish recently.

Jack and I will work on a handover of the running of this department which we expect to take until the middle of November, with Jack taking over an increasing amount of responsibility until this time.

On behalf of the DSG, we would like to thank all candidates who have applied, their time to attend interviews with us and discuss their ideas. We wish Jack the best of luck with his role and for the wider success of the operations department.

Chris.

Congratulations, I guess. I haven't been here long enough to judge whether this is deserved or not, but I hope the division has made the right decision.

Congrats, Jack. Shame about the Sugden fiasco but hopefully we will power on, with the role finally filled 🙂

Congratulations Jack - I wish you all the best with your role! 🤞

To address some of the other comments, so that perhaps they can be put to rest...

Of course I am personally disappointed, having also put myself forward for the role. I left some time to reflect since the appointment (as opposed to commenting right away!), and I am even more certain that the ‘Sugden saga’ should in no way be allowed to reflect on the good work I have no doubt Jack will do.

If we cast our minds back to my post back in August, then we - as a Division - should be pleased that we are in a much better place to help Operations and volunteerism improve. I have no doubt that the approach and tone I have taken to try to resolve this situation has been the necessary one; I know that in fighting for the right of some volunteers (including myself), it will have appeared as if I were diminishing the efforts of others - DSG members included - which although I have deemed as necessary, does not make it a particularly nice thing to do. I apologise to those who have felt I have diminished their contribution; I aim only to strengthen and, at times, influence! We are now, thankfully, at a point where we have made progress.

As much as we might hate to admit it, VATSIM is full of emotion and passion, and this undoubtedly reflects on appointments and people’s attitudes toward the division.

But I look forward to working with you Jack - after all, I still want to get the Scottish vMATS published, and I can’t do that without Ops! 😄
