S3 Training at Heathrow

With the appropriate staff and support now in place, we are pleased to announce the resumption of Approach Radar (S2->S3) training for UK Students at Heathrow.

Heathrow will draw from the existing waiting lists of TG1 and TG2. When a training place becomes available, it will be offered to the first eligible student on one of the lists. Completion of training will result in the awarding of an S3 rating and the Heathrow APP Major Endorsement. Solo Approach Validations (SAV's) will be handled in the normal way.

In order to be eligible for a training place at Heathrow, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Meeting the standard division requirement of 12 hours controlling in the past three months in order to be considered "active".
  • At least 20 hours controlling Heathrow Tower post-validation.
  • Five hours of controlling Heathrow Tower in the past month.

Upon offer of a training place, commencement of practical training will be subject to the completion of the Heathrow APC Moodle Course.

These requirements have been enforced not to be overly restrictive. They have been enforced to respect the fact that Heathrow is a busy aerodrome and we don't have time to be teaching students how to perform Tower duties when we're trying to teach them Radar. If a student is clearly struggling with Heathrow (for example, due to complexity or traffic levels), we may elect to return them to the top of the list in their original TG, to continue their training there. Heathrow is a great opportunity, but for the benefit of the student we need to respect the fact that Heathrow is Heathrow and can bring its own challenges to training (struggling through training doesn't benefit anyone).

Once we've had time to settle into the new system and fine tune things, we may look to change the requirements depending on feedback.

So do we have to ask to join the list? And also can you be on the list without the tower hours? Like if you’re waiting for tower sessions and building hours can you still be on the list?

No - you simply join the TG1 or TG2 list as normal. When Heathrow has a place, we'll offer it to someone on one of the two lists who is eligible. We'll also keep a track of who is eligible at any given time.

If a student ends up getting a TG1/2 place would they be able to deffer it for a Heathrow place?

Normally, no - as we don't want to create a de-facto waiting list for Heathrow at this time. However, we will take it on a case-by-case basis depending on the training situation and when places are likely to arise on Heathrow - we're ultimately looking for students who have a keen interest in Heathrow.
