      Mid-Summer Madness XIII
We're delighted to announce the latest rendition of VATSIM UK's longest running event.
On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of August 2018, Birmingham Airport (EGBB) will host its 13th annual Mid Summer Madness Event. Birmingham Airport will be fully staffed from 1000-1900Z (1100-2000 BST) on both days.
There are no flight bookings, so just turn up and fly to and/or from EGBB in whatever you like, whenever you like and as many times as you like! Please help us celebrate the 13th anniversary of this fantastic event by flying in and out of Birmingham - the skies are guaranteed to be busy around EGBB on the 3rd and 4th of August!
This year we've again teamed up with UK2000 Scenery, Flight1 Software and Majestic Software. Thanks to the generosity of these fantastic companies, we're able to offer the following prizes to pilots who fly in or out of Birmingham during the event weekend:
UK2000 Scenery – for two winners, a product of your choice from their store, either Xtreme range airports or VFR Airfields 1, 2 or 3
Flight1 Software – for two winners, a product of your choice from their store up to $69.95.
Majestic Software – Majestic Dash 8 Q400 PRO version
All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one of these amazing prizes is have "MSMXIII" written in your flight plan remarks and fly one whole flight into or out of EGBB during the event timings whilst connected to the VATSIM network. Thanks again to our sponsors who have made this possible. Winners will be selected at random and will be contacted after the event.
      Pilot Information:
The transition altitude at EGBB is 6000 feet. The initial climb on all SIDs at EGBB is 6000 feet. There will be a continuous voice and text ATIS for EGBB; please report the information you have on board upon initial contact with an EGBB controller.
There have been significant changes with the SIDS and STARS at Birmingham recently, please make sure you have up to date AIRAC data and charts.
      EGBB Charts
      Demo/Payware FS9, FSX and P3D EGBB Scenery
Freeware EGBB Scenery for FS9, FSX and P3D is also available from flightsim.com
Due to the differences between FS default scenery and add-on scenery, installing add-on scenery is highly encouraged.
Most of your controllers and a few of your fellow pilots will also be sat in the same room, and perhaps enjoying a beer or two! We really hope you can help us make this the best Mid Summer Madness event yet!
We hope to see you there!

      São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport
São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport (IATA: GRU, ICAO: SBGR), often referred to as GRU Airport, or simply GRU, is the primary international airport serving São Paulo. It is popularly known locally as either Cumbica Airport, after the district where it is located and the Brazilian Air Force base that still exists at the airport complex, or Guarulhos Airport, after the municipality of Guarulhos, in the São Paulo metropolitan area, where it is located. Since November 28, 2001 the airport has been named after André Franco Montoro (1916–1999), former Governor of São Paulo state. The airport was rebranded as GRU Airport in 2012.
In Brazil the airport was ranked first in terms of transported passengers, aircraft operations, and cargo handled in 2012, placing it as the second busiest airport in Latin America by passenger traffic (36,596,326 in 2016) after Mexico City International Airport. Guarulhos has slot restrictions, operating with a maximum of 45 operations/hour and being one of the five airports with such restrictions in Brazil (the others are São Paulo-Congonhas, Brasília, Belo Horizonte-Pampulha and Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont).
Since 2012, the airport has been operated by a consortium composed of Invepar S/A, Airports Company South Africa, and Infraero. Some of its facilities are shared with the São Paulo Air Force Base of the Brazilian Air Force.
      Runways and taxiways
GRU has two parallel runways. Runway 09R/27L is 3,000 metres (9,843 ft) long and 45 metres (148 ft) wide, while runway 09L/27R is 3,700 metres (12,140 ft) long and 60 metres (200 ft) wide, after being widened in 2015 to better receive the Airbus A380. The field elevation at the airport is 750 metres (2,459 ft) above mean sea level. Runway 09R/27L is used preferentially for landings and runway 09L/27R preferentially for takeoffs, but the Airbus A380 uses the longer and wider latter runway for both landing and taking off. There are high-speed exit taxiways on both runways that allow for traffic to depart the runway at higher speed to allow better efficiency for landing and takeoff traffic. As of 2014, there was an average of 650 takeoff and landing operations per day at the airport.
The airport has three passenger terminals, numbered 1, 2, and 3, according to their order along the airport access road when arriving from the city.
Terminal 1 is the smallest and simplest. It has only domestic flights, and as of July 2016, only two airlines operate there: Azul and Passaredo. Terminal 1 has no jet bridges and no direct access to the other terminals, which can only be reached by a free shuttle bus.
Terminal 2 is the oldest and largest, and for many years was the sole airport terminal, although its two wings were considered different terminals at the time. It has the majority of domestic flights and to Latin American destinations, as well as a few intercontinental flights.
Terminal 3 is the newest and most modern. It has only international flights and concentrates most long-haul intercontinental traffic, in addition to the LATAM Group's Latin American flights. Five of the terminal's gates can accommodate the Airbus A380. Terminals 2 and 3 are directly linked by a walkway.
The airport also has a large air cargo terminal with a built area of 97,000 square metres (1,040,000 sq ft) and capable of handling any type of cargo, including refrigerated and hazardous shipments.
      Navigational aids
There are two navigational aids that GRU traffic uses. The Bonsucesso very high frequency omnidirectional range with distance measuring equipment (VOR-DME) is located 9.1 kilometres; 5.6 miles (4.9 nmi) to the east of GRU.

For this event London Heathrow - EGLL must be used for initial departure and São Paulo - SBGR for arrival
      Flyin code will be OVN23
The following airframes are permitted for use during this Flyin, regardless of rank:
*"OFF DUTY" WILL BE DISABLED* I'm afraid you will have to stay awake if you want the 100 points!
FSX/P3D Payware : (Tropicalsim) I own this and would highly recommend! - https://secure.simmarket.com/tropicalsim-so-paulo-guarulhos-sbgr-2017-fsx-p3d.phtml
Freeware : Untested but free option (use at own risk) - https://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=zanolli
This will be released on the day, we hope to be able to provide you with the real deal. 😉

The slot booking page will go live shortly. Slots will be available for VATSIM ONLY, due to the lack of IVAO users in our VA, we do not see it feasible to create slots for this network, however as always we welcome IVAO pilots and even the OFFLINERS to join us on Discord. (There is nothing stopping you from booking the normal flight anyway) 😉

Will we all make it? Who will be the first to open a can of ZZZzzz? Can we all stay alert through hours of darkness and into the early hours to make a safe landing at the end?  How many of you can rise to the challenge? More importantly... will Wilks finally manage to finish an Overnighter!?!?!?
Tune in on the 27th of July 2019 for the carnage.... 😉

Michael Kühne will do his Radar CPT+ on Swiss Radar to earn his C3 rating.
Fly through his airspace and give him some traffic.
      Good luck, Michael!
